The Asian Games 2026 will be held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. This will mark the third time the Asian Games is being hosted in Japan, after Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994. Cricket has been officially retained for the Asian Games 2026. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will make its debut in the 2026 edition of the continental event.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty recently received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award for their outstanding achievements in badminton. The pair reached the No. 1 rank in the Badminton World Federation rankings in 2023 and won the Asian Games gold medal in Hangzhou. The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award was originally established as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1991–92 and renamed in 2021. It is India’s highest sporting honour, given for the most exceptional performance by a sportsperson over the last four years. Only performances in recognized international events are eligible for consideration. The award includes a ₹25 lakh cash prize, a medal, and a certificate of honour, with typically one award given each year.

China won the Sudirman Cup 2025, claiming their 14th title and showing their strength in international badminton. The Sudirman Cup is the World Mixed Team Badminton Championship, organized by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). China has now won 14 out of 18 editions, proving their long-standing dominance in the sport. The tournament was first held in 1989 and China has reached the finals 16 times in a row. South Korea, the second most successful team, has won only 4 titles. An Seyoung won her match in the final, but South Korea still lost to China in the overall tie.

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa won the Superbet Chess Classic held in Bucharest, Romania. He secured the title after a close tiebreak round against Alireza Firouzja and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. All three players had 5.5 points in nine rounds, which led to a three-way playoff. The first two tiebreak games ended in draws—first between Praggnanandhaa and Firouzja, then between Vachier-Lagrave and Firouzja. Praggnanandhaa won the third and final game against Vachier-Lagrave to claim the title. World Champion D Gukesh finished ninth with 4 points, drawing his last match with Fabiano Caruana. The next event of the Grand Chess Tour, the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz, will begin in Croatia on July 1.

India won the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Under-19 Championship by defeating Bangladesh 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout. The final match was held on May 18, 2025, at Golden Jubilee Stadium, Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh. India showed great composure and converted penalties to win their second SAFF U-19 title, the first being in 2023. This win shows India’s growing strength in youth football in South Asia.

Veteran Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina has officially retired from professional football at the age of 42. He began his career at FC Barcelona in 2000 and later helped Villarreal qualify for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League. His most memorable spell was at Liverpool, where he played 394 matches, won the Football Association (FA) Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and received the Premier League Golden Glove three times. He made nearly 1,000 professional appearances and kept over 300 clean sheets in his 26-year career. Internationally, Reina earned 36 caps for Spain, winning the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup in 2010 and UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

India topped the medal table at the first Junior International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup 2025 held in Suhl, Germany. India won 3 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze medals, finishing ahead of the People’s Republic of China. The Suhl meet started on May 19 and was the first Junior ISSF World Cup of 2025. A total of 638 athletes from 59 countries participated in the event. The next Junior ISSF World Cup will be held in New Delhi from September 24 to October 2, 2025.

More than 60 Indian athletes took part in the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 held in Gumi, Republic of Korea, from May 27 to 31. Indian athletes competed in 30 medal events, including 15 men’s, 14 women’s, and one mixed team event. India secured second place in the overall medal tally. The People’s Republic of China topped the medal table. India won a total of 24 medals – eight gold, 10 silver, and six bronze.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 final took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 6 runs. The schedule for the Women’s Asia Cup Hockey 2025 has been announced and the tournament will be held in Hangzhou, China from 5th to 14th September. The Indian Women’s Hockey Team will start their campaign against Thailand on 5th September. India is in Pool B with Japan, Thailand, and Singapore, while Pool A includes China, Korea, Malaysia, and Chinese Taipei. India won the Bronze medal in the last edition and is aiming for the Gold this time. Winning the Asia Cup will give Team India direct entry to the 2026 Women’s Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) Hockey World Cup.
