Indian women’s hockey stalwart Vandana Katariya has announced her retirement from international hockey after a career spanning over 15 years. She played 320 international matches and scored 158 goals, making her the most-capped player in Indian women’s hockey history. Vandana made her senior team debut in 2009. She became the first and only Indian woman to score a hat-trick at the Olympics. She received the Arjuna Award in 2021 and the Padma Shri in 2022 for her contributions to Indian hockey. She received the Hockey India Dhanraj Pillay Award for Forward of the Year in 2021 and 2022.

Uttar Pradesh won the 47th National Junior Girls’ Handball Championship by defeating Himachal Pradesh 19-17 at KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium. UP made a strong comeback after trailing 10-8 at halftime, showing greater intensity and agility in the second half. Himachal Pradesh missed crucial opportunities, while UP goalkeeper Niharika played a key role by stopping multiple attacks. The 47th National Junior Girls’ Handball Championship took place in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, from March 26 to 30, 2025.

The Indian archery team won four medals at the Archery World Cup 2025 Stage 1 held in Auburndale, Florida, United States of America from 8 to 13 April 2025. India secured one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, finishing fourth in the overall medal tally behind Mexico, China, and the United States of America (USA). Rishabh Yadav and Jyothi Surekha Vennam won the gold medal in the Compound mixed team event by defeating Chinese Taipei’s I-Jou Huang and Chieh-Lun Chen. The Indian men’s Recurve team of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai, and Atanu Das won silver after losing to China. Dhiraj Bommadevara also won bronze in Men’s Recurve by defeating Spain’s Andres Temino. Rishabh Yadav, Abhishek Verma, and Ojas Deotale won bronze in Men’s Compound team event.

Recently, Indian shooters ended their campaign at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Lima 2025 with seven medals. These included two gold, four silver, and one bronze, placing India third behind China and the United States of America (USA) in the medal tally. The ISSF World Cup for Rifle and Shotgun was held in Lima, the capital city of Peru, from April 13 to 22, 2025. This was the second ISSF World Cup of 2025, following the first event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, held from April 1 to 10, 2025.

Indian Chess Grandmaster Koneru Humpy won the Pune FIDE Women’s Grand Prix by scoring 7 out of 9 points. She defeated Bulgarian International Master Nurgyul Salimova in the final round using the White pieces. Chinese Grandmaster Zhu Jiner also scored 7 out of 9 points by defeating Russian International Master Polina Shuvalova with the Black pieces. Due to tiebreak rules, Zhu was placed second while both players shared the Grand Prix points and prize money. Humpy’s win boosts her chances of qualifying for the next Women’s Candidates Chess tournament. Indian International Master Divya Deshmukh drew with Polish player Alina Kashlinskaya and ranked third with 5.5 points.

Brazil has won the bid to host the 10th edition of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Women’s World Cup 2027. Brazil received the maximum votes at the FIFA Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand, on 25 April 2025. This is the first time a South American country will host the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The 9th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2023. Spain won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup by defeating England in the final. Brazil had earlier hosted the FIFA Men’s World Cup in 1950 and 2014.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the seventh edition of the Khelo India Youth Games on May 4, 2025, through videoconferencing. The Khelo India Youth Games are being held in Bihar for the first time, from May 4 to 15, across five districts including Patna, Nalanda, Gaya, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai. More than 8,500 athletes and 1,500 technical staff are participating in 28 sports. Bihar has seen new institutions like the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence and Bihar Sports University set up.

China won the Sudirman Cup 2025, claiming their 14th title and showing their strength in international badminton. The Sudirman Cup is the World Mixed Team Badminton Championship, organized by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). China has now won 14 out of 18 editions, proving their long-standing dominance in the sport. The tournament was first held in 1989 and China has reached the finals 16 times in a row. South Korea, the second most successful team, has won only 4 titles. An Seyoung won her match in the final, but South Korea still lost to China in the overall tie.

Recently, L.R. Srihari from Tamil Nadu became India’s 86th Grandmaster (GM) in chess. He crossed the required 2500 Elo rating in May 2023 at the Dubai Open. He earned his first Grandmaster norm at the Sixdays Budapest Grandmaster Round-Robin in August 2023, and the second at the 2023 Qatar Masters. After nearly a year and nine tournaments, he finally achieved his third and final Grandmaster norm at the ongoing Asian Individual Championships in Al-Ain, Abu Dhabi.
