Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame 2025, becoming the 11th Indian to receive this prestigious global honour. He is among seven cricketing legends, including two women players, selected in the 2025 inductee list. The ICC Cricket Hall of Fame recognises legendary players for their historic contributions to cricket across generations and countries. It was launched on January 2, 2009 by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in partnership with the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA).

Nicholas Pooran, West Indies’ Twenty20 (T20) record-holder for runs and appearances, retired from international cricket on June 10, 2025, at age 29. He scored 1,983 runs in 61 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 2,275 runs in 106 T20 Internationals. Pooran hit his career-best T20 score of 98 against Afghanistan and surpassed Chris Gayle as West Indies’ top T20 run-scorer. He hit the most sixes (40) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) while playing for Lucknow Super Giants.

South Africa won the Cricket- World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 title by five wickets against defending champion Australia on June 14 at Lord’s, London. This is South Africa’s first major cricket title in 27 years, sparking emotional celebrations. New Zealand won the first WTC mace in 2021 by beating India. Australia won it in 2023, and now South Africa has claimed it in 2025.The win is seen as a unifying moment for the “Rainbow Nation”, breaking a long ICC jinx since 1998.

The Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (HUTN) announced it will host the first Hockey India Masters Cup from June 18 to 27, 2025, at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Chennai. The tournament is for men above 40 years and women above 35 years. It will feature 12 men’s and 8 women’s teams, starting with group matches and ending with knockouts and finals. Famous former players like Olympian Sudha Chaudhari and Adam Sinclair will participate. Men’s teams are divided into 4 pools and women’s into 2 pools, with states like Haryana, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu taking part.

Indian shuttlers recently delivered their best-ever performance by winning 27 medals at the Asian Para-Badminton Championship 2025 held in Thailand from 17th to 22nd June. The medal tally includes four gold, 10 silver, and 13 bronze medals, marking India’s highest total in the history of this championship. Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan won gold with a straight-sets victory over Ruthick Raghupathi and Manasi Joshi.

Recently, Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya announced that Rajasthan will host the fifth edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) in November 2025. The event will be jointly organised by Poornima University and Rajasthan University in Jaipur. It is a major initiative under the Khelo India programme, launched in 2020 to promote sports at the university level. The previous KIUG 2024 was held across seven northeastern states and saw 4,500 athletes compete, with 770 medals awarded.

Asia’s oldest and the world’s third-oldest football tournament, the Durand Cup, returns for its 134th edition in 2025. It was officially flagged off at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on July 4, 2025. The tournament symbolises India’s rich football heritage and the contribution of the Indian Armed Forces to sports.

At the Asian Para-Archery Championships in Beijing, Paralympic gold medallist Harvinder Singh won individual gold in recurve men’s open. He defeated Hanreuchai Netsiri of Thailand with a score of 7-1 in the final. This marks Harvinder’s first individual gold at the Asian Para-Archery Championships after a six-year wait. He won three medals at the event — individual gold, mixed recurve gold with Bhawna, and men’s recurve team silver with Vivek Chikara. Harvinder is a two-time Paralympic medalist, showcasing consistent excellence in para-archery.

Recently, India secured the hosting rights for two major shooting events from the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). New Delhi will host the Combined ISSF World Cup in 2027 and the ISSF Junior World Championships in 2028. The announcement was made during the ISSF executive committee meeting. New Delhi will also host the ISSF Junior World Cup (Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun) in September–October 2025.

Hockey Jharkhand won the 15th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2025 by defeating Hockey Association of Odisha 1-0 in the final. The final was held at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh AstroTurf Hockey Stadium, Ranchi, Jharkhand. Hockey Haryana won the Bronze medal after a 3-3 draw and a 5-4 shootout win against Hockey Mizoram.
