Recently, sportspersons from Uttar Pradesh Police won the highest number of medals for India at the World Police and Fire Games 2025 held in Alabama, USA. Uttar Pradesh Police athletes secured 95 medals, including 45 gold, 34 silver, and 16 bronze. The medals were won in events like athletics, wrestling, shooting, weightlifting, and swimming.

World No.1 Grandmaster (GM) Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid) won the inaugural Chess Esports World Cup 2025. He defeated GM Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons) by winning both sets 3-1 in a best-of-three final. Carlsen lost only one game, in the first round of the second set. He earned a prize of US$ 250,000 and 1000 points for Team Liquid. GM Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons) beat GM Arjun Erigaisi (Gen.G Esports) 3.5-2.5 to secure third place. The Chess Esports World Cup 2025 was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Recently, Ramesh Budhial became the first Indian to win a medal in the Asian Surfing Championships, clinching bronze in the Open Men’s category in Chennai with 12.60 points. Gold in this category went to Korea’s Kanoa Heejae (15.17 points) and silver to Indonesia’s Pajar Ariyana (14.57 points). In the Open Women’s category, Japan’s Anri Matsuno won gold (14.90), Sumomo Sato silver (13.70), and Thailand’s Isabel Higgs bronze (11.76).

The Khelo India ASMITA Football League 2025-26 was inaugurated by Smt. Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, at Godavari Engineering College Ground, Jalgaon, Maharashtra. The league promotes women’s participation in sports and nurtures young female talent, especially from tribal and minority communities. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled the logo, mascot, and trophy of the 12th Men’s Asia Cup Hockey Championship in Patna. Bihar is hosting the tournament for the first time at Rajgir International Stadium, from 29th August to 7th September 2025. The mascot “Chand,” inspired by the tiger and hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, symbolises courage, agility, and skill. The tournament begins on 29th August, National Sports Day, marking Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary.

A 24-member Indian archery squad is participating in the World Archery Youth Championships 2025 starting 19 August in Winnipeg, Canada. The tournament runs until 24 August and features 570 youth archers from 63 countries. Competitions include recurve and compound disciplines across Under-18 (U18) and Under-21 (U21) categories. Event formats include individual, team, and mixed team for both men and women. India aims to repeat its 2023 performance in Limerick, Ireland, where it won 11 medals, including six golds.

Carlos Alcaraz won the men’s singles tennis title at Cincinnati Open after top seed Jannik Sinner retired due to illness on August 18, 2025. Alcaraz ended world number one Sinner’s 26-match winning streak on hard courts while leading 5-0 in the first set. This was Alcaraz’s third Masters 1000 title of the season after Monte Carlo and Rome. Sinner, aiming to defend his Cincinnati title like Roger Federer in 2015, retired after just 23 minutes.

North East United Football Club (FC) retained the Durand Cup title 2025. The final was held at Yuva Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata. North East United FC defeated Dimond Harbour FC with a 6-1 scoreline. Parthib Gogoi and Asheer Akhtar scored early goals to make it 2-0 by half-time. Other goals for North East United FC were scored by Alaaeddine Ajaraie, Andy, Thoi Singh, and Jairo Samperio. The victory highlights North East United FC’s dominance in Indian football tournaments.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Cup 2025 will be hosted in Goa, India from October 30 to November 27, 2025. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich praised India as a strong chess nation with passionate fans and expects 90+ countries to participate. 206 players will compete in a head-to-head, two-game knockout format over eight rounds. At least 21 Indian players qualified, including Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa R, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, Vidit Gujrathi, and others. The top three finishers will directly qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, deciding the challenger for the World Chess Championship.

Amit Mishra, former India leg-spinner, announced retirement from professional cricket at age 42. Career spanned nearly 25 years, with last competitive cricket in 2024 IPL for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Mishra played for Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and LSG in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
