India’s Hydrogen Train Targeted for 110 kmph Speed

Indian Railways is developing India’s first hydrogen-powered trainset for regular operation at a target speed of 110 kmph. The train completed trial runs at 120 kmph, while its earlier operational cap was 75 kmph.

Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Train Technology

A hydrogen train uses a fuel-cell system to generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The process produces water vapour and heat as by-products, and it does not require overhead electric traction for propulsion.

Prototype Development and Route Plan

The 10-coach hydrogen trainset was flagged off for the 89-km Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway in Haryana. The prototype was developed indigenously with the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation.

Infrastructure and Safety Requirements

A specialised maintenance facility at Shakurbasti in Delhi has been set up for hydrogen storage and refuelling. Indian Railways is also examining future routes and consulting stakeholders on fuel supply infrastructure and technical requirements.
