Conviction is the correct antonym for acquittal because acquit = release where as conviction = confinement on account of committing crime. Conviction is a mode of punishment. Acquittal & Conviction are used as opposite terms in legal parlance for handing out the verdict. For e.g, JuD chief Hafeez Saeed acquitted by Pak Supreme Court. Ajmal Amir Kasab convicted for 26/11 attacks. I hope the above examples will help in allaying the confusion and clear all the ambiguities.
