In the verdant forests of Arunachal Pradesh, a significant botanical discovery has been made. Researchers have identified a new species of tree and named it Meiogyne arunachalensis. The eastern Himalayan and Northeast India region as the first known habitat for Meiogyne arunachalensis. Arunachal Pradesh, with its lush landscapes and diverse ecosystems, has proven to be a hotspot for biodiversity. The discovery of this new species further underscores the ecological significance of the region.

Morphological Similarity and Distinctive Features

Meiogyne arunachalensis exhibits morphological similarity to another species called Meiogyne maxiflora, which is found in Thailand. However, the newly discovered tree species demonstrates distinctive vegetative and reproductive characteristics that set it apart from its closest relative. Notably, Meiogyne arunachalensis stands out as the largest species in the Meiogyne genus, boasting impressive tree height and girth.

Recorded Habitats and Potential Range

The recorded habitats of Meiogyne arunachalensis include the East Siang district and the Namdapha National Park in Changlang district, both located in Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, the research article suggests that this tree species may also be present in the neighboring districts of Lower Dibang Valley and Lohit. Furthermore, it is likely to be found in northern parts of Myanmar, particularly in areas adjacent to the Namdapha National Park.

Collaborative Efforts and Exploration

The discovery of Meiogyne arunachalensis was made possible through a biodiversity expedition in the Adi hills of Arunachal Pradesh. This scientific exploration received support from the Hem Chand Mahindra Foundation, the Wildlife Institute of India, and the forest department of Arunachal Pradesh. These collaborative efforts have contributed to our understanding of the region’s flora and the importance of conserving its unique biodiversity.
