US Approves Support Package for Apache and M777 Systems

The United States approved a proposed Foreign Military Sale to India for long-term maintenance, sustainment services, and logistical support for the AH-64E Apache attack helicopter fleet and the M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzer artillery system. The package is valued at an estimated $482.2 million, or about Rs 4,000 crore, and it covers spare parts, repair services, training, technical assistance, engineering support, and logistics support.

Foreign Military Sale Process

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency formally notified the proposed sale on 17 June 2026 in the Federal Register. The US Department of State had earlier informed the US Congress about the possible sales on 18 May 2026. A Foreign Military Sale is a government-to-government mechanism used by the United States for defence equipment, services, and related support.

Apache and M777 Support Components

About 230 million of the package is allocated for the M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. This portion includes spare parts, repair services, training, and technical assistance for the artillery system. A separate package worth 198.2 million is designated for the Apache combat helicopter fleet and includes engineering, technical, and logistics support.

Platforms Covered Under the Package

The AH-64E Apache is a twin-engine attack helicopter used for anti-armour and close air support roles. The M777A2 is a 155 mm towed howitzer known for its lightweight titanium construction and air-transportable design. The package focuses on sustaining existing platforms rather than acquiring new weapon systems.

India’s Earlier Procurement of the Systems

India purchased 22 Apache helicopters in 2015. India also purchased 145 M777 howitzer guns in 2016. These systems are part of India’s inventory for air assault and artillery support roles.
