Tu-160 Bomber

Russia has reportedly deployed the world’s largest bomber, the Tu-160, in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Tu-160, also known as the Blackjack in NATO countries, is a strategic bomber developed by Russia’s Tupolev Design Bureau in the 1980s.

Capabilities of Tu-160 Bomber

The Tu-160 bomber is propelled by four turbofan engines with afterburners, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of about 2,200 km/h or Mach 1.6. It has a range exceeding 12,000 km and is equipped with an in-flight refueling system, enabling it to remain in the air for extended periods. Additionally, the bomber has the capacity to carry different armaments, such as nuclear and conventional bombs, cruise missiles, and anti-ship missiles. The bomber can carry its weapons in its internal bomb bay or on external pylons, with a maximum payload capacity of up to 40,000 kg.

Sophisticated Avionics Suite

The Tu-160 bomber is fitted with an advanced avionics suite, which comprises a digital fly-by-wire control system, advanced communication and navigation systems, and sophisticated targeting systems. It has a crew of four, consisting of a pilot, co-pilot, navigator, and weapons officer.

Deployment and Recent Role

Russia’s Air Force has been using the Tu-160 bomber since 1987, and the bomber has received numerous upgrades over the years to enhance its capabilities and extend its lifespan. The Tu-160 has played an important part in Russia’s military operations, especially in Syria, in recent times.

India’s Interest in Buying Tu-160 Bombers

Last year, Indian Air Marshal Anoop Raha announced India’s interest in purchasing at least six Tu-160 bombers from Russia to strengthen its strategic forces. Experts believe that Tu-160 bombers could play a crucial role in a two-front battle by attacking vital air bases, warships, and aircraft carriers patrolling the seas in Pakistan and China.
