The sixth edition of Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2026 was inaugurated on 20 January 2026 by Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta. It was concluded on 26 January. Indian Army team won the men’s ice hockey final, defeating Chandigarh with a last-minute goal. The Army retained its title in men’s ice hockey. Haryana won the overall team championship of the Ladakh phase by securing four gold medals with 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals. Ladakh finished second with 2 Gold, 5 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals. Maharashtra secured third place with 2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals.

Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai reunited at the Australian Open to win the women’s doubles tennis title. The Belgian–Chinese pair defeated Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic 7-6(4), 6-4. This was their ninth Grand Slam doubles title together in just their seventh event as a pair. Mertens now has six Grand Slam titles, including three Australian Opens, while Zhang has three. Mertens secured her 40th week as World Number One in doubles. In mixed doubles, Olivia Gadecki and John Peers defended the Australian Open title, ending a 37-year gap.

Carlos Alcaraz won the Australian Open men’s singles tennis title 2026, completing his career Grand Slam. He defeated Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the final at Rod Laver Arena. This is Alcaraz’s first Australian Open win at the age of 22. Novak Djokovic, 38, was aiming for a record 25th major and to become the oldest man in the Open era to win a Grand Slam. Djokovic was defeated in the Australian Open final for the first time in his 11 appearances.

The 6th Badminton Asia Team Championships began on 3 February 2026 in Qingdao, China, with men’s and women’s national teams from Asia. India’s women are defending their title without two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, who withdrew from the tournament. Women’s team is in Group Y with fourth seeds Thailand and Myanmar, featuring Tanvi Sharma, Unnati Hooda, Malvika Bansod, and doubles pair Treesa Jolly–Gayatri Gopichand. Men’s team is in Group C with fourth seeds Japan and Singapore, comprising Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy–Chirag Shetty.

India will host the Asian Rifle and Pistol Championship 2027 in Delhi, a historic first for Indian shooting. The championship will offer eight Olympic quota places for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. These eight quotas will be in addition to 12 quota places from the World Cup Shooting event. The World Cup (Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun) will be held in Delhi from 21 to 30 April 2027. Hosting rights were confirmed by the Asian Shooting Confederation to the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI).

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won their second Women’s Premier League (WPL) title by defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by six wickets at the BCA Stadium, Kotambi, Vadodara. Delhi Capitals, batting first, posted 203/4 in 20 overs, the highest first-innings total in a WPL final. Jemimah Rodrigues top-scored with 57 runs, while Laura Wolvaardt (44) and Chinelle Henry (35 off 15 balls)* powered DC past 200. RCB completed the highest successful chase in a WPL final, scoring 204/4 in 19.4 overs. Captain Smriti Mandhana played a match-winning knock of 87 runs off 41 balls, becoming the tournament’s leading run-scorer.

The Esports World Cup Foundation included chess among 16 titles at the first Esports Nations Cup 2026 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 2–29 November 2026. The chess event will run from 2–8 November 2026 with 128 players representing nations, maximum two per country. The tournament starts with 16 round-robin groups of eight players, with top four advancing to knockouts.

India emerged as the overall champion at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship 2026 held in New Delhi, topping the medal tally with a total of 94 medals, including 51 gold, 23 silver, and 20 bronze. On the final day of the championship, Indian shooters added 6 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals, further strengthening their dominant position in the continent. The overall performance highlighted India’s dominance in both individual and team events, with shooters excelling in precision, consistency, and competitive endurance across multiple disciplines.

India’s Renu Singh topped the women’s 21-km event at the second Aizawl International Half Marathon on February 14, 2026. She secured the top position with a time of 1:21:22, followed by Ethiopia’s Tsige Debay Tadese and Bahrain’s Marta Hirpato Yota. The race was held at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl, Mizoram. Kenya’s Kemboi Kevin Kiprono won the men’s 21 kilometre race at the Aizawl International Half Marathon 2026. Around 3,000 runners participated, including 16 elite international athletes. Participants came from Kenya, Ethiopia, Bahrain, United Kingdom and France along with runners from across India.
