Indian Chess Grandmaster Koneru Humpy won the Pune FIDE Women’s Grand Prix by scoring 7 out of 9 points. She defeated Bulgarian International Master Nurgyul Salimova in the final round using the White pieces. Chinese Grandmaster Zhu Jiner also scored 7 out of 9 points by defeating Russian International Master Polina Shuvalova with the Black pieces. Due to tiebreak rules, Zhu was placed second while both players shared the Grand Prix points and prize money. Humpy’s win boosts her chances of qualifying for the next Women’s Candidates Chess tournament. Indian International Master Divya Deshmukh drew with Polish player Alina Kashlinskaya and ranked third with 5.5 points.

The Indian archery team performed excellently at the Archery World Cup 2025 Stage-2 held in Shanghai, China, from 6 to 11 May 2025. India won a total of seven medals, including two gold, one silver, and four bronze. Madhura Dhamangaonkar earned a gold medal in the women’s individual compound event. Ojas Deotale, Abhishek Verma, and Rishabh Yadav secured a gold in the men’s team compound event. Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Madhura Dhamangaonkar, and Chikitha Taniparthi won a silver in the women’s team compound event. Deepika Kumari claimed a bronze medal in the women’s individual recurve. Parth Salunkhe earned a bronze in the men’s individual recurve. Abhishek Verma and Madhura Dhamangaonkar bagged a bronze in the mixed team compound. Rishabh Yadav took a bronze in the men’s individual compound. The third stage will be held in Antalya, Turkiye, from 3 to 8 June 2025.

Heinrich Klaasen, the 33-year-old South African cricketer, has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect. Klaasen had earlier retired from Test cricket in 2023 and has now stepped away from One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) too. He represented South Africa in 4 Tests, 60 ODIs, and 58 T20Is, scoring a total of 2764 runs. Klaasen recently played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and scored a century in his last league match.

Arya Borse and Arjun Babuta won the gold medal in the 10m air rifle mixed team event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup 2025 in Munich by defeating China 17-7. India finished third in the medal tally with two gold and two bronze medals behind China and Norway. Suruchi Singh won gold in women’s 10m air pistol. Sift Kaur Samra and Elavenil Valarivan won bronze in rifle events.

England will host the largest-ever ICC Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup in 2026, featuring 12 teams playing 33 matches across seven venues from June 12 to July 5. The tournament will open with England facing Sri Lanka at Edgbaston and end with the final at the iconic Lord’s stadium. The league stage is divided into two groups. Group 1 includes Australia, South Africa, India, Pakistan, and two teams from the Global Qualifier. Group 2 includes hosts England, defending champions New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and two qualifier teams.

Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the logo, mascot, and 100-day countdown for the New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championship. The event will take place from 26th September to 5th October at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. It is the 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships. This will be the biggest para athletics event ever hosted in India.

Recently, Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra won the Javelin Throw title at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 meet held in the Czech Republic. The 27-year-old two-time Olympic medallist secured the gold medal with a best throw of 85.29 metres. Douw Smit from South Africa finished second with 84.12 metres, and Anderson Peters from Grenada came third with 83.63 metres. This was Neeraj’s second straight victory after winning the Paris Diamond League, where he crossed 90 metres for the first time with a throw of 90.23 metres.

Recently, Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya announced that Rajasthan will host the fifth edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) in November 2025. The event will be jointly organised by Poornima University and Rajasthan University in Jaipur. It is a major initiative under the Khelo India programme, launched in 2020 to promote sports at the university level. The previous KIUG 2024 was held across seven northeastern states and saw 4,500 athletes compete, with 770 medals awarded.
