Recently, 16-year-old Ilamparthi AR from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, became India’s 90th Chess Grandmaster (GM). He is also the 35th Grandmaster from Tamil Nadu, a state known for producing chess legends like Viswanathan Anand, R Praggnanandhaa, and D Gukesh. Ilamparthi achieved his final Grandmaster norm at the Bijeljina Open 2025 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is a beneficiary of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu’s (SDAT) Champions Development Scheme.

Tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna announced his retirement at the age of 45. His final match was at the Paris Masters 1000, where he partnered with Alexander Bublik. In 2024, he became the oldest player to win a Men’s Doubles Grand Slam at the Australian Open. He also became the oldest Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) 1000 winner at the Miami Open 2024. He achieved World Number 1 ranking in doubles in 2024. Throughout his career, he won 26 doubles titles, including six ATP Masters 1000 titles.

In November 2025, world champion para-archer Sheetal Devi became the first Indian athlete selected to represent the country in an able-bodied international competition. She will compete in the compound archery event at the Asia Cup 2025 Stage 3, scheduled in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from December 9–16, 2025. Sheetal, born with phocomelia, a condition that left her without arms, shoots from a seated position. She earned her place in the 16-member Indian archery squad after finishing third overall in national trials at the SAI Centre, Sonepat.

Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium will host the first-ever National Indoor Athletics Championships in January 2026. The event is part of the 2026 domestic calendar of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), which includes around 40 competitions. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) plans to introduce indoor events such as pole vault (men and women) and heptathlon (men). The men’s indoor heptathlon includes seven events—60m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000m—spread over two days. AFI is also bidding for the 2028 Asian Indoor Championships.

Janvi Jindal, 18, from Chandigarh has become the first Indian female to hold 11 Guinness World Records in freestyle skating. She recently added six new records in November, including the most 360-degree rotations on inline skates in 30 seconds and one minute, and most one-wheeled 360-degree spins. Janvi earlier earned five Guinness titles in July 2025. She is now India’s second-highest Guinness record holder, after Sachin Tendulkar (19 records). Janvi is self-trained and also holds 21 total records, including India Book, Asia Book and Worldwide Book records. Chandigarh University honoured her with a ₹11,000 award and sports scholarship.

India’s top men’s T20 domestic cricket tournament, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025, started from 27 November. It was started in 2007. A total of 38 teams participated in 2025. It is a Twenty20 championship organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The tournament is named after former Indian Test cricketer Syed Mushtaq Ali.

India concluded their Deaflympics shooting campaign in Tokyo with 16 medals: 7 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze. Shooting accounted for 16 out of 39 total medals in the competition over 10 days. Mahit Sandhu, rifle shooter, won 4 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver. Abhinav Deshwal and Pranjali Prashant Dhumal, pistol shooters, won 2 gold and 1 silver. Dhanush Srikanth won 2 gold in 10 metre air rifle individual and mixed team events. Mohammed Murtaza Vania won 1 silver, 1 bronze; Komal Milind Waghmare won 2 bronze. Anuya Prasad won gold in women’s 10 metre air pistol; Shourya Saini silver in 50 metre 3 positions; Kushagra Singh Rajawat bronze in 50 metre rifle prone. At the previous Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, India won 5 shooting medals: 3 gold, 2 bronze.

India won the silver medal in hockey at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 in Ipoh, Malaysia. Belgium defeated India 1-0, with Thibeau Stockbroekx scoring the only goal. This was Belgium’s first trophy in their second appearance at the tournament. India returned after a six-year gap and finished as runners-up for the second consecutive time, having lost the 2019 final to Republic of Korea. India, with five titles, remains the second-most successful team, after Australia who have 10 wins.

The Archery Premier League (APL) won the Emerging Professional Sports Event of the Year at the India Sports Awards 2025 held during FICCI TURF 2025 Global Sports Summit in New Delhi. Archery Premier League (APL) is organised by the Archery Association of India (AAI) and is the world’s first professional archery league. Its first season was held at Yamuna Sports Complex, New Delhi, from 2 to 12 October 2025. It featured Indian and international men and women archers in Recurve and Compound events. The league follows a franchise-based, gender-balanced, broadcast-friendly format to make archery a mainstream spectator sport.

The 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA 2025) has begun in Bangkok and Chonburi province, Thailand, with the Opening Ceremony at Rajamangala National Stadium. Thailand is hosting over 13,000 athletes from 11 Southeast Asian nations: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Brunei Darussalam, and Timor-Leste. Athletes will compete in 50 medal sports, including Olympic disciplines as well as traditional regional sports. The event highlights regional sporting excellence, cultural exchange, and collaboration among Southeast Asian countries.
