DRI Seizes 362 Metric Tonnes of Pakistan-Origin Dry Dates

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized over 362 metric tonnes of dry dates of Pakistan origin at Container Freight Station, Ambad, in Nashik on 14 September 2026. The consignment was imported by a Mumbai-based firm and arrived with documents that declared the United Arab Emirates as the country of origin.

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence is India’s apex anti-smuggling agency under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance. It handles intelligence-based enforcement against customs fraud, illicit trade, and violations of import restrictions.

Trans-shipment and Country of Origin

Trans-shipment is the movement of goods through one country or port before final import into another country. In this case, the dry dates were shipped from Karachi Port in Pakistan to Jebel Ali Port in the United Arab Emirates and then moved in different containers and vessels for onward shipment to India.

Country of origin is a customs classification used to identify the place where goods are produced or substantially transformed. False declaration of origin is a customs offence under Indian import control and anti-smuggling provisions.

Import Restrictions on Pakistan-Origin Goods

India imposed a complete prohibition on the direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan with effect from 2 May 2025. The restriction was introduced for national security reasons after the Pahalgam terror attack.

Such prohibitions apply to direct imports, indirect imports, and transit routes that use third countries for routing goods into India.

Operation Deep Manifest

Operation Deep Manifest is a DRI enforcement initiative against Pakistan-origin goods attempted to be imported into India through third-country routing. The operation uses intelligence inputs, document checks, and container verification at ports and inland container depots.
