Gaganyaan Achieves Human-Rating Milestones
India’s first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan, has completed major development and validation milestones for human-rating systems. On 6 August 2026, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology informed the Rajya Sabha that the Indian Space Research Organisation had completed propulsion, structural, life-support, and safety testing for the mission.
Gaganyaan Mission
Gaganyaan is India’s human spaceflight programme under the Indian Space Research Organisation. The mission uses the Human Rated Launch Vehicle HLVM3, which is the human-rated version of the LVM3 launch vehicle. The programme includes crew safety systems, life-support systems, and ground infrastructure for astronaut training and mission operations.
Human-Rating Systems and Test Components
Human-rating refers to the qualification of a launch vehicle and spacecraft for carrying humans with safety margins, redundancy, and verified performance. For Gaganyaan, propulsion stages and structures of HLVM3 have undergone development and ground testing. Propulsion systems for the Crew Module and Service Module have also been developed, tested, and qualified.
The Environmental Control and Life Support System, the Thermal Protection System, and the Crew Module Up-righting System have been developed and tested. The Crew Escape System has five types of motors, and all of them have undergone static testing and structural qualification.
Test Flights and Ground Infrastructure
Precursor validation for the mission has included the TV-D1 Test Vehicle Mission and two Integrated Air Drop Tests, namely IADT-01 and IADT-02. These tests validated the spacecraft deceleration system. Ground support infrastructure for the programme includes the Gaganyaan Control Centre, the Crew Training Facility, the Orbital Module Preparation Facility, and modifications to the Second Launch Pad.
