D.Y. Patil, Former Governors and Educationist, Dies at 90

Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, known as D.Y. Patil, died on 4 August 2026 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, at the age of 90. He received the Padma Shri in 1991 for social work and served as Governor of Tripura and Governor of Bihar.

Early Life and Political Career

D.Y. Patil was born on 22 October 1935 in Ambap in Kolhapur district. He served as Mayor of Kolhapur from 1957 to 1962 and as a Congress MLA from 1967 to 1978.

Governorship and Constitutional Office

Patil served as Governor of Tripura from 27 November 2009 to 21 March 2013. He served as Governor of Bihar from 22 March 2013 to 26 November 2014 and also held additional charge of West Bengal.

Education and Institutional Work

Patil founded the D.Y. Patil Group, which includes more than 182 educational institutions, seven universities, and healthcare systems across India. The group is associated with medical, engineering, management, and other professional education institutions.
