Rajkot International Airport

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, inaugurated Rajkot International Airport and various development initiatives amounting to over Rs 860 crores in Rajkot, Gujarat.  This ambitious airport project holds the promise of transforming the region’s transportation infrastructure and contributing to the local industry’s development.

Total Cost and Land Area

The construction of the Rajkot International Airport has been a substantial undertaking, with a total cost of approximately ₹1,500 crore. This significant financial commitment highlights the government’s determination to provide world-class infrastructure to the region. The airport has been developed on a sprawling land area of more than 2500 acres, emphasizing its grand scale and capacity.

A Runway for Big Aircraft

The airport boasts a well-designed and spacious runway, stretching 3,000 meters long. This impressive length allows big aircraft to land comfortably, facilitating seamless air travel and transportation of goods and passengers.

Green and Sustainable Features

One of the most commendable aspects of the Rajkot International Airport is its focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. The terminal building has earned a prestigious GRIHA -4 compliance rating, signifying its adherence to Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment standards. Various sustainable features such as Double Insulated Roofing System, skylights, LED lighting, and Low Heat Gain Glazing have been incorporated into the New Terminal Building (NITB), ensuring energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

The design of the airport’s terminal has been thoughtfully inspired by Rajkot’s rich cultural heritage. The architecture resonates with the city’s artistic vibrancy, showcasing the region’s art forms from Lippan art to Dandiya dance through dynamic external façade and splendid interiors. This artistic touch adds a unique charm to the airport, making it a symbol of cultural pride.

Memorandum of Understanding and Foundation Stone

The construction of this remarkable Greenfield Airport is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Airport Authority of India and the Civil Aviation Department of the Government of Gujarat. The foundation stone for the international airport was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a Bhoomipujan ceremony on 7th October 2017, held in Hirasar village, near Chotila.
