PhonePe Launches Tatkal NPS Account Opening

PhonePe launched Tatkal NPS on its platform on 27 October 2026, enabling users to open a National Pension System (NPS) account digitally with an initial contribution of ₹250. The service uses existing bank Know Your Customer (KYC) details authenticated through a one-time password (OTP), so users do not need to upload fresh documents.

National Pension System

The National Pension System is a defined-contribution retirement savings scheme regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). It began for central government employees on 1 January 2004 and was extended to all citizens on a voluntary basis in 2009. Subscribers contribute to an individual retirement account, and the accumulated funds are invested through pension funds in permitted asset classes.

A Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) identifies an NPS subscriber’s account. NPS accounts include Tier I, the primary retirement account, and Tier II, a voluntary investment account available to eligible subscribers with an active Tier I account.

Tatkal NPS and digital onboarding

Tatkal NPS is a PFRDA-developed framework that allows eligible applicants to reuse bank KYC information for digital NPS registration. PFRDA announced the facility’s availability on PhonePe and BHIM on 6 October 2026. PhonePe’s service operates in partnership with selected banks, with further bank coverage planned.

The PhonePe onboarding process has four stages: searching for NPS in the app, selecting a linked bank account, authenticating with a bank OTP and making the initial payment through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The process is paperless and does not require a branch or pension-office visit.

Subscriber eligibility and account features

The digital account-opening facility is intended for users including gig workers, freelancers, small business owners and younger investors who may not have access to an employer-linked retirement scheme. The minimum initial contribution specified for opening through PhonePe is ₹250; this is the opening contribution stated for this service.
