NMDC Commissions ₹5,427 Crore Iron Ore Processing Plant

NMDC Ltd. commissioned an integrated iron ore processing, slurry pipeline, and pellet-making project worth ₹5,427 crore in Chhattisgarh on 27 and 28 September 2026. The project includes a new iron ore processing plant at Bacheli, a 15 million tonne per annum slurry pipeline, and a 2 million tonne per annum pellet plant at Nagarnar.

Integrated Iron Ore Value Chain

NMDC Ltd. is a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Steel and is one of India’s largest iron ore producers. The company operates major iron ore mines in the Bailadila range in Chhattisgarh and supplies raw material for the steel sector. The new facilities allow NMDC to process iron ore fines and slimes from the Bailadila mines into concentrate. The concentrate is then converted into pellets, which are used in steelmaking.

Bacheli Processing Plant and Nagarnar Pellet Unit

The iron ore processing plant has been set up at Bacheli in Dantewada district. The pellet plant has been established at Nagarnar in Bastar district. The pellet plant uses Straight Grate Induration technology, which is a common industrial process for hardening iron ore pellets through heating. Pellets are a standard feed material in several iron and steel production routes.

Slurry Pipeline and Transport System

The 135-km slurry pipeline carries processed iron ore concentrate from Bacheli to Nagarnar. A slurry pipeline is a system that transports mineral concentrate mixed with water through pipes. The pipeline provides an alternative to road transport and reduces dependence on railways for movement of processed ore. Such pipelines are used in mining regions to move bulk mineral material over long distances.

The project expands NMDC’s presence across mining, processing, transportation, and pellet production.
