Government Launches Digital Livestock Insurance Portal

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying is launching a Livestock Insurance Portal on 28 September 2026 in New Delhi. The portal is designed as a single digital platform for livestock insurance under the Livestock Insurance Scheme, with functions for policy issuance, claim processing, monitoring, and reporting.

Livestock Insurance Scheme

The Livestock Insurance Scheme is a subsidy-based insurance arrangement for cattle, pigs, and rabbits. Under the present framework, small and marginal farmers pay 15% of the premium, while the Centre and the states share the remaining 85%. The scheme provides subsidised coverage for up to 10 cattle units per beneficiary household for most eligible animals. Separate limits apply to pigs and rabbits under the scheme design.

Digital Features and Language Access

The portal will operate in 11 regional languages, apart from Hindi and English. The digital interface will cover registration, insurance coverage, and related protection services through online access. The portal is intended to support transparency, efficiency, accessibility, and technology-based service delivery in livestock insurance administration. It will also provide a common interface for beneficiaries, insurers, and implementing agencies.

National Livestock Mission and Identification

The initiative forms part of the National Livestock Mission, which is a central sector scheme for livestock development. The government is also examining radio-frequency identification tagging for animal identification and claim settlement support. Radio-frequency identification uses electronic tags and readers for unique identification of animals. This system is used in livestock management for traceability, record keeping, and verification of insured animals.
