India, US Hold Talks on Defence, Trade, Technology

India and the United States held high-level talks in New Delhi in May 2026 on defence, trade, strategic technology, energy, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, nuclear cooperation, counter-terrorism, and the Indo-Pacific. The discussions involved US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio, Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

India-US Strategic Cooperation

The India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership covers defence, security, trade, energy, technology, and regional cooperation. The TRUST initiative, or Transforming the Relationship Utilising Strategic Technology, was launched in February 2025 as an upgrade of the earlier iCET, or Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology.

Defence and Security Mechanisms

The 18th India-US Defence Policy Group meeting was held in New Delhi on 25 March 2026 and was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and US Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby. The meeting reviewed co-development and co-production of military equipment, intelligence sharing, joint military exercises, logistics, and defence technology collaboration. A 10-year Framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership was signed in Washington, D.C., on 31 October 2025. The framework covers expanded cooperation in intelligence sharing, joint exercises, logistics, and defence technology co-development.

Trade, Energy and Supply Chains

A new India-U.S. Trade Facilitation Portal was launched during Vikram Misri’s visit to Washington, D.C., in May 2026. The portal is linked to a bilateral trade target of 500 billion and is intended to streamline commerce between the two countries. In February 2026, the United States announced a trade deal with India covering market access for US products, tariff reduction on industrial goods and agricultural products, and purchases of US energy, ICT, and other products worth over 500 billion. Talks in Washington, D.C., in December 2025 and May 2026 also covered resilient supply chains, defence industrial cooperation, space, semiconductors, quantum technologies, biotechnology, and energy security.
