Virender Singh Basoya was extradited from the United Arab Emirates to India on 14 August 2026 after coordinated action by the Narcotics Control Bureau and diplomatic channels. He is named in a major narcotics case linked to cocaine and mephedrone trafficking, and he was brought to India on Air India flight 4310 from Dubai.

Extradition and Legal Process

Extradition is the formal surrender of a person by one state to another for prosecution or punishment. In India, extradition cases often involve a Non-Bailable Warrant, a Red Corner Notice, and coordination between law-enforcement agencies and the Ministry of External Affairs.

A Red Corner Notice is issued through Interpol to locate and provisionally arrest a wanted person pending extradition. A Non-Bailable Warrant is a court order under Indian criminal procedure that authorises arrest without the option of immediate bail.

Narcotics Control in India

The Narcotics Control Bureau is India’s central agency for drug law enforcement under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It works under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, which regulates narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and related offences in India.

India follows a multi-agency framework in narcotics cases that includes state police, specialised units such as the Delhi Police Special Cell, customs authorities, and central investigative agencies. Drug trafficking cases often involve cross-border movement, financial tracing, and seizure of contraband substances such as cocaine and mephedrone.

Drug Trafficking Cases and Seizures

Drug syndicate cases in India commonly involve large seizures, multiple arrests, and investigation of supply chains across cities and international routes. In the Mahipalpur seizure of 1 October 2024, the Delhi Police Special Cell recovered over 500 kilograms of cocaine and arrested 14 persons.

Indian courts can issue warrants and other coercive orders when an accused person leaves the country during investigation. International cooperation in such cases may involve extradition requests, diplomatic communication, and Interpol notices.
