Mattu Gulla

Mattu Gulla is a Kerala’s local variety of brinjal. It was awarded the GI certificate by the Geographical Indication Registry (GIR) of the Union Government. The peasants staged a struggle to sustain their indigenous variety of Mattu Gulla when the Indian variety of brinjal was under threat from the BT in the country.

It is not Kerala, It is south-west of Karnataka, Udupi District. A saint Sri Vadirajatirtha of Udupi Krishna Sode Vadiraja Matha invented this variety of Mattu Brinjal in 16th century.
