Ladakh Sends First 15,000-Stem Lilium Consignment

The first consignment of 15,000 A-grade Lilium stems from Ladakh was flagged off on 29 September 2026 for major Indian flower markets. The consignment was flagged off at KBR Airport, Leh, and it included red, pink, white, yellow, and orange varieties grown in Choglamsar, Leh.

Lilium as a Cut Flower Crop

Lilium is a bulbous flowering plant used as a premium cut flower in domestic and international floriculture. The Ladakh consignment consisted of A-grade stems with 4-5 buds and a shelf life of 5-7 days.

Premium cut flowers such as Lilium are sold in retail markets at about ₹150 to ₹200 per stem in India. Cut flower grading in floriculture commonly depends on stem length, bud count, flower size, and post-harvest shelf life.

High-Altitude Floriculture in Ladakh

The Choglamsar flower field is located at an elevation of 10,600 feet, or 3,265 metres, and is described as the world’s highest-altitude flower field. The field was inaugurated on 17 September 2026 and contains over 25 lakh, or 2.5 million, Liliums.

The flowers are cultivated without pesticides or fertilisers, and solar energy is used for irrigation. High-altitude floriculture in Ladakh uses cold desert conditions, strong sunlight, and low humidity for flower cultivation.

Livelihood and Expansion Plan

The project was completed in 60 days from the foundation laying on 22 June 2026. It has engaged 15 local women in cutting, sorting, and packaging, with each worker receiving a daily wage of ₹900.

The administration plans to expand high-value flower cultivation in Kargil, Drass, Sham, Changthang, and Zanskar. Deputy Commissioners have been asked to identify at least 20 acres each, with a target of 200 acres by next year.
