Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2026 Observance from November 1 to 15
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs will observe Janjatiya Gaurav Pakhwada nationwide from November 1 to 15, 2026. The fortnight will culminate in Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on November 15, the birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Dharti Aaba Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The Government of India designated November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas in 2021 to honour tribal heroes and their contributions.
National observance and 2026 programme
The Pakhwada is scheduled to promote awareness of government schemes and entitlements and to facilitate delivery of benefits to tribal families. More than 300 projects are planned for tribal communities, including 228 inaugurations and 74 foundation-stone layings. More than 160 state-level activities are also scheduled. On November 12, approximately 200 students from Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) are scheduled to interact with the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The National Tribal Literary Festival will take place in New Delhi on November 12 and 13, with tribal writers from across India. On November 14, the Rani Durgavati Adivasi Mahila Sammelan will bring together 500 tribal women entrepreneurs from 30 States and Union Territories to develop market linkages.
Digital platforms and tribal initiatives
Two national digital platforms are scheduled for launch during the observance. The Jan-HIT portal will provide a platform for tribal health data, while the National FRA Digital Platform will support forest-rights claims. The Forest Rights Act (FRA), formally the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, recognises forest rights of eligible Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers. The digital platform is intended to support claims under this law.
Birsa Munda and constitutional context
Birsa Munda was a tribal freedom fighter associated with the Munda community. The Ulgulan, or “Great Tumult”, was a movement led by Birsa Munda against British rule and the exploitation of tribal communities in the late nineteenth century. Article 342 of the Constitution provides for the specification of Scheduled Tribes by Presidential order for each State or Union Territory. The Fifth Schedule concerns the administration and control of Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes in specified States.
