INS Nipun Commissioned into Indian Navy

INS Nipun was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 31 August 2026 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. It is the second indigenously designed and built Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel and was delivered by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam, on 30 July 2026.

Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel

The Nistar class is a category of Diving Support Vessel used for deep-sea diving, underwater support, and submarine rescue tasks. INS Nipun has a length of 119.4 metres and is configured for saturation diving, air diving, and heliox diving operations up to 300 metres.

Submarine Rescue and Diving Capability

INS Nipun is designed to embark and operate a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle, or DSRV, for rescue operations involving disabled submarines. A DSRV is a specialised submersible used to reach trapped submarine crews and transfer them to safety.

Western Naval Command Deployment

The vessel will serve on the West Coast under the Western Naval Command. The Western Naval Command is one of the three operational commands of the Indian Navy and is headquartered at Mumbai.
