Filmmaker Kuku Kohli Dies at 77

Avtar “Kuku” Kohli, a veteran Bollywood filmmaker, died in Mumbai at the age of 77 on 25 August 2026. He suffered a massive heart attack and died at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri, Mumbai.

Early Life and Film Career

Kohli worked in Hindi cinema for several decades and began his film career as an assistant director under Raj Kapoor. He later became known for directing commercial Hindi films in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Directorial Debut and Notable Films

Kohli made his directorial debut with Phool Aur Kaante in 1991. The film launched Ajay Devgn in Hindi cinema and became one of the best-known action dramas of the period. His other films included Suhaag (1994), Haqeeqat (1995), Anari No. 1 (1999), and Woh Tera Naam Tha (2004).
