Tata Communications Plans $450 Million AI Network

Tata Communications announced an investment of nearly $450 million, or about ₹4,350 crore, on 26 October 2026 to build high-speed network infrastructure for India’s artificial intelligence (AI) data-centre corridors. The project will add approximately 10,000 kilometres of long-haul fibre cables across the country.

Project Route and Network Capacity

The expansion is planned in three phases. The first phase will connect Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. Later phases will extend to data-centre ecosystems on the east coast and in western India, including Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and GIFT City.

The new network is planned to add about 6 petabits per second (Pb/s) of capacity. Tata Communications’ existing network in India carries approximately 1.25 Pb/s. The additional capacity is planned for incorporation between financial years 2030 and 2036. The company will fund the project entirely through operating cash flows.

Fibre Networks and Data Centres

Fibre-optic cables transmit information as light pulses through glass or plastic fibres. Long-haul fibre networks connect distant cities and facilities, while data centres house computing and storage systems. The proposed cables are intended to connect data-centre clusters with cloud-services firms, Global Capability Centres and organisations such as banks.

Tata Communications describes the planned network as an “AI Super Highway” and intends to integrate it with its existing global network backbone. The company anticipates that the initiative could create more than $1 billion in market opportunities as India’s digital infrastructure expands.

Capacity and Connectivity Facts

A petabit per second is a measure of data-transfer capacity equal to 1,000 terabits per second. The planned 6 Pb/s addition is separate from the approximately 1.25 Pb/s currently carried by the company’s India network.
