Shannon Gabriel, a West Indies fast bowler, announced his retirement from international cricket. Gabriel began his international career in 2012. Sharath Kamal has been named the first Indian ambassador of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Foundation.
The announcement was made during day 11 of the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) season five at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. Sharath was elected to the ITTF’s Athlete’s Commission in November 2022. He will promote table tennis for development, especially among children from underprivileged backgrounds. He holds the record for the most medals in Commonwealth Games history for table tennis, including 13 medals with three golds at the 2022 Birmingham Games.

Jyoti Berwal won a gold medal in the women’s 76 kg freestyle category at the U20 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. She defeated Ukraine’s Mariia Orlevych in the final, not allowing her to score any points. Jyoti also beat opponents from Mongolia, China, and Turkey on her way to the final. This is India’s second consecutive U20 world title in this category, following Priya Malik’s win in 2023. Indian wrestlers Komal and Sristhi won bronze medals in the 59 kg and 68 kg categories, respectively.

The Indian men’s hockey team, led by Harmanpreet Singh, won the Men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy for a record fifth time on 17 September 2024. India defeated China 1-0 in the final held at Moqi Hockey Training Base, China, with Jugraj Singh scoring the winning goal in the 51st minute. India had won the trophy previously in 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023. India remained unbeaten in the tournament, defeating China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Pakistan. Gulveer Singh, a 26-year-old Indian athlete, won gold in the 5,000m race at the World Athletics Continental Tour in Japan. He set a new national record of 13 minutes and 11.82 seconds, breaking his earlier record of 13 minutes and 18.92 seconds. Earlier in March, he set the 10,000m national record in California with a time of 27 minutes and 41.81 seconds.
His effort broke Surender Singh’s 16-year-old record. Despite his achievements, Gulveer missed the Paris Olympic qualification time by over 41 seconds.

The inaugural Kho Kho World Cup will be held in India in 2025, announced by the Kho Kho Federation of India and the International Kho Kho Federation. The event will feature 24 countries from 6 continents, with 16 teams for both men and women. To promote the sport, the KKFI plans to introduce Kho Kho in 200 schools across 10 cities and aims to register at least 50 lakh players. The tournament will include a week of matches with top athletes worldwide, aiming to elevate Kho Kho to an international level. Kho Kho, rooted in India, has a global presence, with 54 countries participating in the sport.

Indian duo Krittwika Roy and Yashaswini Ghorpade won the women’s doubles title at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Feeder Cagliari 2024 in Italy. They defeated South Korea’s Yoo Siwoo and Kim Haeun 3-1 in the final. The Indian pair beat Italy’s Arianna Barani and Maria Picu 3-0 in the first round and Japan’s Sachi Aoki and Sakura Yokoi 3-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, they overcame Germany’s Sophia Klee and Franziska Schreiner 3-1. Ghorpade and Harmeet Desai reached the mixed doubles semifinals, while Harmeet also advanced to the men’s singles quarterfinals.

Harmeet Desai of India won both men’s singles and mixed doubles titles at the 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Feeder Caracas tournament in Venezuela. The event took place from 31 October to 3 November 2024. Ranked 90th globally, Harmeet defeated France’s Joe Seyfried (world no. 149) 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 in the men’s singles final. In mixed doubles, Harmeet and Krittwika Roy defeated Cuba’s Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca Carrazana 3-2 in a tight match.
