Space System Design Lab

The space system design lab was inaugurated recently in Ahmedabad by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe). The Space Systems Design Lab’s purpose is to help space start-ups turn their innovative ideas into implementable models more quickly, and reduce research and development costs.

Focus and Objectives

The main focus of the IN-SPACe design lab is to enable start-ups in the space sector to build prototypes with the least iterations, thus significantly reducing the turnaround time and research and development costs for start-ups. In turn, this will help non-government entities (NGEs) to play an important part in the development of cutting-edge space technologies.

To achieve its objectives, the IN-SPACe design lab comprises high-end analysis and simulation software for mission simulation, modeling, visualizing, optimizing payload and spacecraft, ground station, and launch vehicle avionics. The software resources include Pathwave system design, System Tool Kit, Advance Design Systems, 3D CAD Mach 3, high frequency structure simulation, Simcenter 3D space System (Thermal and cooling), Finite Element analysis structure (FEAST) and OpticStudio (Zemax). They will play a part in mission planning to RF, structural and thermal design and analysis of space systems.

Computing and Training Resources

The lab features computing resources that can help start-ups to validate and visualize their designs ideas prior to the launch of the manufacturing process. Periodic training and workshops will be organized by the IN-SPACe at the space systems design lab to provide practical hands-on training to NGEs to use software packages that are provided to them.

Eligibility and Seed Fund

Earlier, IN-SPACe had announced a seed fund scheme of Rs 1 crore for early-stage space start-ups. It will benefit early-stage start-ups that utilize space technology to solve upstream or midstream and downstream challenges in the space sector.

Global Aspirations

ISRO Chairman S Somanath stated that the goal of NGE participation in space activities is aimed at enhancing the scale of the space economy from the present two per cent to 10 per cent of the global economy. ISRO is committed to working with NGEs towards this, he said.

Location

The Space Systems Design Lab of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) is located in Bopal in Ahmedabad, India. The design lab will provide tremendous benefits to space start-ups, as it will enable them to verify and visualize their designs before metal cutting, as well as confirm fabricated product’s test results with minimum turnaround time.
