British racing driver Mercedes’ George Russell won the Brazilian F1 Grand-prix title in 2022. George Russell scored his first-ever Formula 1 victory and he is followed by his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton at the Sao Paulo GP.
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari finished third in the race. There’s one more race left for the 2022 F1 season, with the Abu Dhabi GP finale.

Achanta Sharath Kamal, ace Indian paddler, is the first Indian to be chosen to the International Table Tennis Federation’s Athletes’ Commission (ITTF).
Eight athletes, including four men and four women, were chosen for the Athletes’ Commission from Asia, Africa, America, Europe, and Oceania. They will serve for four years, from 2022 to 2026. Sharath has already been selected for Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

Dr CV Ananda Bose was appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal. The appointment was announced by a notification from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Manipur Governor La Ganesan has been holding the additional charge of West Bengal since July after his predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned after his nomination as the National Democratic Alliance’s vice presidential candidate.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 600 MW Kameng Hydro Power Station in Arunachal Pradesh.
It is the biggest Hydro Power Project implemented by NEEPCO Ltd, a Mini Ratna Power PSU under Ministry of Power. This is also the sixth hydro power plant in the North East. Generation of 3353 Million Units annually from the project will make Arunachal Pradesh a power surplus state, also contributing to the National Grid.

USA, Singapore, Sweden, Netherlands and Swiss are the most network ready countries as per Network Readiness Index 2022.
The Index was launched in 2002 by the World Economic Forum as part of the Global Information Technology Report (GITR). It is a key metric of the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for development and competitiveness. This year’s theme is ‘Stepping into the new digital era: How and why digital natives will shape the world’.

Notes:
The Cambridge dictionary chose “homer” as the word of the year for 2022. It also announced that the choice is influenced by the famous game Wordle.
The word ”homer” was searched for nearly 75,000 times during the first week of May 2022 as it was the answer in Wordle. The word is a reference to an informal American English word for a ‘home run’ in baseball.

Khalid Jawed’s book ‘The Paradise of Food’ has been awarded the JCB Prize for Literature 2022. The book has been translated into English from Urdu.
The Paradise of Food is the fourth translation to win the JCB Prize and the first work in Urdu.

Venu Gopal Achanta, Director, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) has been elected as a member of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM).
Professor Gopal was declared an elected Member of CIPM in the recently held 27th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) meeting at Paris, France. CGPM is represented by 64 member countries and meets every 4th year at International Bureau of Weight and Measure (BIPM), France.

German racing driver Sebastian Vettel, a four-time Formula One champion announced his retirement in July 2022.
He participated in his last racing event in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In 2010, Vettel became the youngest Formula One driver to win a championship at 23. Vettel, who raced for Red Bull and Ferrari since his 2007 debut, joined Aston Martin 2021.

The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, EAC-PM has issued a working paper titled ‘Why India does poorly on global perception indices: Case study of three opinion-based indices’.
It says that the decline in India’s rankings on a number of global indices is due to the problems with the methodology used in these opinion-based indices. The Paper has analysed – Freedom in the World Index, V-DEM indices, and EIU Democracy Index.
