Notes:
The UN General Assembly has appointed Antonio Guterres as the UN Secretary-General for a second term, which commences from January 1, 2022 and ends at December 31, 2026. Volkan Bozkir, who is the President of 75th session of the UN General Assembly announced this appointment and administered the oath of office.
Antonio Guterres is a Portuguese politician serving the head of UN General Assembly since 2017.

Notes:
The Ministry of Tourism has formulated a Draft National Strategy and Roadmap for Development of Rural Tourism in India.
This is an initiative towards Atmanirbhar Bharat, driven by the concept of “Vocal for Local”. The Ministry of Tourism has invited feedback/comments/suggestions on the draft National Strategy and Roadmap.

The United Nations released a proposed global roadmap for universal access to clean energy by 2030.
This report was released ahead of the major Ministerial meeting on June 21-25 where countries and businesses will announce energy plans for the decade. The report envisages annual investments of $35 billion and $25 billion for electricity access and clean cooking by 2030 respectively.

The Union Health Ministry released information about a software named ‘Covid Severity Score’, which will identify Covid patients who may require ventilation, based on an algorithm.
The Foundation For Innovations In Health, Kolkata with support from the Department of Science & Technology, in collaboration with IIT Guwahati, have developed an algorithm. It allocates a Covid Severity Score (CSS), using the measures of symptoms, signs, vital parameters, test reports etc.

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways announced that the Ministry will make the Flex-fuel engines, mandatory for the automobile industry.
In a flex fuel engine, there will be choice for the people to use 100 per cent crude oil or 100 per ethanol. India has earlier preponed the cut-off date for mixing 20 per cent ethanol in petrol from 2030 to 2025.

Every year, the United Nations observe “International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict” on 19th June. This day is observed to raise awareness about this inhuman issue and the urgent need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence.
A resolution to observe this day was passed in the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.

Great Barrier Reef spans for 2,300km off Australia’s north-east coast. It gained World Heritage ranking in 1981 due to its scientific and intrinsic importance.
Recently, UNESCO recently said the Great Barrier Reef should be put on a list of World Heritage Sites that are “in danger” due to the damage it has suffered. Several bleaching events on the reef in the past five years caused significant loss of coral.

As per the UN chief Antonio Guterres’ annual report to the Security Council on children and armed conflict, more than 8,500 children were used as soldiers last year in various conflicts across the world.
The most violations in 2020 were committed in Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen.

The Government of India is in the process of formulating a new policy named “Green Tariff Policy”, which aims to make power generated from green sources / renewable sources available at a cheaper rate compared to that of conventional power generation.
This announcement has been made by the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Raj Kumar Singh.

The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the merger of Government owned Central Railside Warehouse Company Ltd (CRWC), with its holding company Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC).
This decision has been made in line with the ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’ policy of the Government, as spelt out in Budget 2021-22.
