UN celebrates six separate language days to raise awareness of the history, culture and development of each of its six official languages – English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and French.
June 6 is celebrated as the UN Russian Language Day, which is also the birthday of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. The poet is considered as the father of modern Russian literature. Some of his popular literary works include novel titled “Eugene Onegin” and his poem titled “The Bronze Horseman”.

The state Government of Chhattisgarh has recently launched the ‘Spandan’ Campaign to reduce incidents of suicide and fratricide involving police personnel.
Instructions were issued to senior officers to strictly follow the guidelines regarding counselling and medical treatment for depressed officers and staff by psychiatrists or psychologists in the district headquarters. Yoga classes are also to be arranged. As many as 50 police personnel committed suicide in Chhattisgarh over the past two years.

Former Governor of Jharkhand, Manipur and Mizoram Ved Marwah recently passed away. He was cremated with full state honours in Goa.
The Indian Police Service Officer had also served as the Commissioner of Delhi Police. He was the Chief during critical times like the aftermath of 1984 riots. He had also served in several important positions including Advisor to the J&K Government, besides serving as the Governor of 3 states.

Member countries of the Group of 20 (G 20) recently pledged more than USD 21 billion to fight the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
Earlier in the month of March, the G20 countries injected more than $5 trillion into the global economy to fight the virus and its economic impact across the world. The member countries also urged the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to support the vulnerable countries.

India and Denmark have recently signed an MoU for developing cooperation in the power sector, between the two countries.
Under the MoU, a long-time co-operation in power sector is to be developed by collaborating in areas like offshore wind, long term energy planning, variability in renewable energy production, among others. A Joint Working Group co-chaired by Joint Secretary level officials will also be established.

Indian poet cum writer Javed Akhtar has become the first Indian to receive the prestigious Richard Dawkins Award for 2020.
The award is named after the English evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. It is provided to individuals from the fields of science, education or entertainment, who publicly proclaim the values of secularism, rationalism and upholds scientific truth. The first edition of the award was awarded in the year 2003.

Notes:
The Ramon Magsaysay awards, regarded as Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize, have been cancelled this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is only the third time the annual awards were cancelled in the past six decades. Earlier, the awards were cancelled due to a financial crisis in 1970 and a terrible earthquake that hit the Philippines in 1990. The awards are provided by a Manila-based foundation and named after the third president of the Republic of the Philippines after World War II.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh has recently launched India’s first indigenous physiological parameter monitoring system for COVID-19 patients named COVID BEEP.
The COVID BEEP (Continuous Oxygenation & Vital Information Detection Biomed ECIL ESIC Pod) system has been developed by ESIC Medical College Hyderabad in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and Department of Atomic Energy. The latest version of COVID BEEP has also been fixed with the ECG monitor.

The IT subsidiary of the Mahindra Group Tech Mahindra has signed a joint declaration with UN Global Compact urging governments to align their COVID-19 recovery efforts with the latest climate science.
The IT firm and business services provider has also reaffirmed its commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and target to increase the renewable source of energy to 50% by 2025. It has adopted a low emission technology path to increase the use of renewable energy from 1.7% in 2016 to 18% in 2020.

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has digitally signed a MoU with Rotary India to telecast e-learning content for school children.
The Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank was present during the event. The learning content is to be telecasted in all NCERT TV channels for class 1-12. Under the ‘Vidya Daan 2.0’ programme, Rotary International will provide the e – content in Hindi language to NCERT. Material for special children and Adult Literacy Mission will also be provided.
