On 27 January, the international community comes together to commemorate the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The theme of this year is “Home and Belonging”, which highlights the humanity of the Holocaust victims and survivors. This Day was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly to mark the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp in 1945.

Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is working towards development of Mega International Container Transhipment Port (ICTP) at Galathea Bay of Great Nicobar Island of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The 41,000 crore international transhipment port at Great Nicobar Island aims to match with the global top container transhipment terminals. Other projects include, Airport, Township and Power plant.

Notes:
The entomologists have named a new genus of wasp after Soliga, an indigenous community of Biligiri Rangan Hills in Karnataka.
The new genus has been named as Soliga ecarinata in an acknowledgement of the Soliga lifestyle and in recognition of their conservation of forests and biodiversity.

World Leprosy Day is observed every year on the last Sunday of January. In India, it is observed on 30th January every year, coinciding with the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Leprosy is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) which occurs in more than 120 countries, with more than 200 000 new cases reported every year. India’s Health Minister released National Strategic Plan and Roadmap for Leprosy (2023-27) and National Guidelines for Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) Surveillance in leprosy along with launch of Nikusth 2.0 Portal.

In New Zealand, deadly flood emergency continued after heavy rainfall hit the country’s north island, causing landslides and flash floods.
At least three people have died and one is missing after New Zealand’s largest city Auckland experienced its wettest day. The nation’s weather forecaster, MetService, warned of more severe weather across Auckland.

India claimed its maiden ICC title in women’s cricket as it lifted the inaugural U-19 women’s’ World Cup.
India registered a seven-wicket victory over its England counterpart. The Indian Under-19 women cricket team was led by Shafali Verma.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval launched the US-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) laong with his American counterpart Jake Sullivan.
In May 2022, US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced iCET to expand their strategic technology partnership and defense industrial cooperation between the governments, businesses, and academic institutions.

Notes:
The GST collection in January surged to over ₹ 1.55 lakh crore, second highest-ever collection recorded.
This is for the third time, in the current financial year that the GST collection has crossed ₹ 1.50 lakh crore mark. The highest collection so far is the ₹ 1.68 lakh crore gross mop-up reported in April 2022.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) launched a revised doctrine in which it laid out the role of air power in the “no war, no peace scenario” (NWNP) that India typically faces.
The doctrine, which refers to air power as aerospace power, highlighted the use of air power as part of a joint military strategy involving the two other forces. The doctrine also emphasised that defensive and offensive counter-operations are linked.

Notes:
In the Union Budget 2023, Finance Minister announced Mahila Samman Bachat Patra, a one-time new small savings scheme, for a two-year period up to March 2025.
This initiative will avail a deposit facility for a woman up to Rs 2 lakh for two-year period at a fixed interest rate of 7.5% with partial withdrawal option. Maximum deposit limit of Senior Citizens’ Saving Scheme was increased from ₹15 lakh to ₹30 lakh.
