Prasar Bharati Revamp

The Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development scheme was recently launched to provide financial support to Prasar Bharati, the public broadcaster of India. It aims to boost the infrastructure of public sector broadcasters in the country such as Doordarshan, All India Radio, etc. A Revamp to Prasar Bharati!

About the Scheme

  • The scheme will increase the channels in AIR. It will ensure that AIR reaches 80% of the Indian population
  • 80 lakh free set-top boxes of Doordarshan will be distributed. Here the focus is on border areas, LWE areas, and tribal areas
  • The scheme’s outlay is Rs 2,500 crores
  • Focus on developing high-quality content
  • Increase the capacity of DTH; as in increase the number of channels being broadcasted
  • Purchase of OB vans. OB means Outside Broadcasting. This van has every facility you will find in a broadcasting station such as vision control, cameras, antennas, etc.

Significance

The Government of India is trying to reach the public.  Spread society-related awareness among the citizens. Recently, the I&B ministry issued an advisory on public service broadcasting. The advisory said that every private satellite channel should broadcast programs of social relevance and national importance for at least 30 minutes a day.
