PM Modi Visits Prambanan Temple in Indonesia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on 8 July 2026 during a three-day state visit from 6 to 8 July 2026. He visited the site with President Prabowo Subianto and offered prayers at the Hindu temple dedicated to the Trimurti, namely Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma.

Prambanan Temple: Static Facts

Prambanan Temple was built in the 9th century and is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex. The temple complex contains stone reliefs that depict scenes from the Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit epic associated with Hindu tradition.

India-Indonesia Cultural Cooperation

India and Indonesia agreed to support the conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Archaeological Survey of India is working with Indonesian authorities, including the Ministry of Culture and the Indonesian Heritage Institute, on restoration of several smaller temples within the complex.

Diplomatic Context

India and Indonesia agreed in the 2025 Indonesia-India Joint Statement to cooperate on the restoration of Prambanan Temple. The year 2026–2027 has been designated as the Tagore-Dewantara Year for cultural cooperation between the two countries.
