PM Modi Launches 12 Semiconductor Projects at SEMICON India 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 on 17 September 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi. The fifth edition of the event was held from 17 to 19 September 2026 with the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”.

India Semiconductor Mission

The India Semiconductor Mission is a central government programme for semiconductor and display manufacturing in India. Under the mission, 12 semiconductor projects have been approved across six states with investments exceeding ₹1.64 lakh crore. Three facilities, operated by Micron, Kaynes Semicon and CG Semi, had started commercial production by 17 September 2026. The government launched Semicon India Programme 2.0 in July 2026 with an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore.

Semiconductor Manufacturing in India

Semiconductors are materials used in electronic devices for switching, sensing and data processing. They are used in smartphones, computers, automobiles, telecom equipment and defence electronics. India’s semiconductor policy framework includes fabrication units, assembly, testing, marking and packaging facilities, and design-linked support. The first phase of the mission had an outlay of about US8 billion, while the expanded mission outlay reached US13.5 billion.

Participation and Skill Development

SEMICON India 2026 had more than 600 exhibitors, including 300 international companies. Delegations from more than 50 countries participated in the event. India has achieved its target of developing 85,000 skilled semiconductor engineers in four years. The new target is to train an additional 100,000 engineers for the sector.
