Pentagon Awards Boeing $20 Billion F/A-XX Contract

The Pentagon awarded Boeing a contract worth more than $20 billion on 29 September 2026 for the full-scale development phase of the United States Navy’s next-generation fighter jet, designated F/A-XX. The programme is part of the Navy’s Next Generation Air Dominance system and is intended to support future carrier-based air combat capability.

F/A-XX Programme

The F/A-XX is a sixth-generation fighter aircraft programme for the United States Navy. It is planned to complement and eventually replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the EA-18G Growler, which are both carrier-capable aircraft in current naval service.

The contract includes multiple test aircraft for ground testing, airworthiness trials, systems integration, and weapons integration. Initial deployment of the aircraft is expected in the 2030s.

Competition and Contract Award

Boeing won the contract after competing with Northrop Grumman, which was the other major contender in the F/A-XX programme. The award gives Boeing a second major sixth-generation fighter assignment after its selection in March 2025 to build the United States Air Force’s F-47 fighter.

Michael P. Duffey, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, described the F/A-XX as a critical element of defence capability. Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao described the programme as a generational leap in air superiority.

Design Features and Operational Role

The F/A-XX is planned with extended operational range, enhanced stealth features, and interoperability with manned and unmanned platforms. The aircraft is also expected to operate with Collaborative Combat Aircraft, which are unmanned systems designed to work alongside crewed fighters.

The programme forms part of the United States Navy’s effort to modernise carrier aviation and maintain a sixth-generation fighter capability. The F/A-XX designation uses the United States military aircraft naming system, where “F” stands for fighter and “XX” is a placeholder for a future design.
