NHAI Extends Digital FASTag Local Pass Facility to 121 Toll Plazas
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has extended its digital FASTag Local Pass facility to 121 toll plazas across India. The facility is available to residents living within a 20-kilometre radius of eligible toll plazas and uses the Rajmargyatra mobile app for monthly pass subscription.
FASTag and Electronic Toll Collection
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It is linked to a vehicle’s prepaid or savings account and enables automatic toll deduction at plazas equipped with compatible readers.
Eligibility and Digital Verification
The local pass facility uses consent-based integration with DigiLocker and VAHAN for address and vehicle verification. GIS-based verification is used to check whether the applicant’s registered address falls within the 20-kilometre boundary of the designated toll plaza.
Eligible commuters can obtain the monthly pass online without visiting toll plazas or submitting physical documents. The pass allows unlimited trips through the designated plaza during the validity period of one month.
Pilot Rollout and Administrative Framework
The digital local pass initiative was first piloted in July 2026 at the Mundka–Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) in Delhi. NHAI has stated that the facility will be expanded to additional toll plazas in phases across the country.
Important Facts for Exams
