Gwalior-Chambal Region Gets New Rail Connectivity

The gauge-converted 56-km Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur rail section in Madhya Pradesh was virtually inaugurated on 18 August 2026. The Gwalior-Kailaras MEMU train service was extended up to Birpur on the same day, creating direct rail connectivity between Gwalior, Sabalgarh, Vijaypur and Birpur.

Rail Corridor in the Gwalior-Chambal Region

The Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur section forms part of the Gwalior-Sheopur rail corridor in Madhya Pradesh. The corridor passes through the Morena and Sheopur districts and serves settlements in the Gwalior-Chambal region.

Gauge Conversion and Broad Gauge Network

Gauge conversion is the process of changing a railway line from a narrower track gauge to broad gauge. Indian Railways uses broad gauge of 1,676 mm as the standard gauge for most trunk routes in India.

The newly opened section is part of a phased broad-gauge expansion on the Gwalior-Sheopur route. The remaining 37-km Birpur-Seroni Road section and the 33-km Seroni Road-Sheopur Kalan section are near completion.

The Ministry of Railways stated that the gauge-converted Kailaras-Birpur section will benefit residents of more than 100 villages in Morena and Sheopur districts. The broad-gauge line is also planned for future extension from Sheopur Kalan to Kota in Rajasthan.

The railway budget allocation for Madhya Pradesh rose to ₹15,188 crore for 2026-27. The average annual allocation for the state during 2009-14 was ₹632 crore.
