In the 135th episode of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Nalanda University for reviving the ancient tradition of Shastrarth. Shastrarth is an ancient Indian tradition of structured scholarly debate, where ideas are tested through logic and evidence. The term is derived from Shastra (scriptures/knowledge) and Artha (meaning/interpretation). Its roots lie in the Vedic and Upanishadic period and it was widely practiced in ancient universities such as Nalanda University, Vikramashila, and Takshashila.

Notes:
The Global Environment Facility approved US$1.26 million for a conservation project led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The project will be implemented in Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve. It is one of the largest protected Sudanian savanna ecosystems in West Africa, covering nearly 913,000 hectares. The park is located in southeastern Senegal, near the Guinea border.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) opened the floodgates of the Himayat Sagar reservoir. Water was released downstream due to heavy rainfall and increased inflows in the catchment areas. Himayat Sagar is an artificial lake located in Telangana. It is built on the Esi River, a tributary of the Musi River. The lake was constructed during the rule of the last Nizam of Hyderabad. It was built to provide drinking water and protect Hyderabad from floods.

India and South Korea are set to deepen their defence partnership following the successful collaboration on the K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzer. The collaboration reflects the growing focus on defence manufacturing, technology transfer, and strategic cooperation between the two countries. K9 Vajra-T is a 155 mm, 52-calibre tracked self-propelled howitzer. It is the Indian version of South Korea’s K9 Thunder. It is manufactured by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) with technology transferred from Hanwha Defense (South Korea). It is designed for operations in deserts, plains, and high-altitude regions. It is equipped with a 155 mm/52 calibre gun capable of firing high-explosive, smoke, and guided projectiles.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals has invited applications under the Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry (SMDI). The Scheme is implemented by the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. It aims to promote domestic manufacturing and strengthen India’s medical device industry. The scheme focuses on manufacturing key components, skill development, clinical studies, common infrastructure, and industry promotion.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has given in-principle approval to Odisha’s proposal to resume tiger reintroduction in Satkosia Tiger Reserve. Satkosia Tiger Reserve is located in Odisha. It comprises the Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary. The Mahanadi River flows through the reserve and forms the Satkosia Gorge. The reserve is also part of the Mahanadi Elephant Reserve. It lies at the meeting point of the Deccan Peninsula and Eastern Ghats biogeographic regions.

The Malaprabha River in Karnataka has recently dried up, causing hardship for people living along its banks. It is an important tributary of the Krishna River. The river originates at Kanakumbi village in the Western Ghats (Sahyadri Hills) of Belagavi (Belgaum) district, Karnataka. It flows eastward and joins the Krishna River at Kudala Sangama in Bagalkot district. Its major tributaries are Bennihalla, Hirehalla, and Tuprihalla. The Renukasagar Dam (Navilatirtha Dam) is built across the Malaprabha River.

Notes:
The Indian gaur (bison) translocation programme to Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary has been put on hold due to high anthropogenic pressure, especially cattle presence. Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It represents the northeastern limit of the Eastern Ghats. The sanctuary was declared mainly to conserve wild elephants and their habitats. The Kumarkhunti Reservoir is the only permanent water source supporting wildlife during summer.

The Sangon clan in Arunachal Pradesh has launched an initiative to conserve the Transcaspian marinka (Schizothorax pelzami). It is a ray-finned fish belonging to the Cyprinidae family. It is locally known as Ngarsing in the Nyishi language. The species is mainly distributed in Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran. It inhabits freshwater rivers, streams, springs, and qanats.
