The Ulhas River is a west-flowing river located entirely in Maharashtra. It originates in the Sahyadri Hills (Raigad district) and drains into the Arabian Sea near Vasai Creek. The river flows through Kalyan, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.

Recently, Padma Shri awardee Girish Bharadwaj, popularly known as the “Bridge Man of India”, passed away at the age of 76 in Sullia, Karnataka. A mechanical engineer, he constructed over 140 low-cost, eco-friendly suspension bridges connecting remote rural communities. His mission began in 1989 with the construction of a footbridge over the Payaswini River in Aramburu village, Karnataka. His bridges transformed connectivity across Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017 for his contribution to rural infrastructure and social service.

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched a national initiative for the sustainable utilisation of India’s high-seas fishery resources at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). He also unveiled the Odisha Deep Sea Fishing Mission Document to strengthen the state’s deep-sea fishing ecosystem. The initiative aims to promote sustainable fisheries, marine resource conservation, and the Blue Economy. India’s seafood exports have crossed ₹73,000 crore and reach over 120 countries. The initiative encourages technology-driven fisheries through digital authorisation, vessel tracking, and internationally recognised certification standards.

Super Typhoon Bavi affected the U.S. territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, along with the Ryukyu Islands of Japan and China, in the western North Pacific Ocean. Bavi became the third tropical cyclone in 2026 to reach Category 5 intensity on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (SSHWS). A super typhoon is a typhoon with sustained wind speeds of at least 240 km/h (150 mph), equivalent to a strong Category 4 or Category 5 hurricane.

The 2026 Esports World Cup (EWC) commenced in Paris, France, marking the first time the tournament is being hosted outside Saudi Arabia. The event is being held at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles and will run until 23 August 2026. It features over 2,000 players, 25 tournaments, and a record prize pool of USD 75 million. More than 200 elite clubs from over 100 countries are participating.

The National Naadam Festival is Mongolia’s largest traditional cultural and sporting festival, celebrated annually from 10–13 July. It is known as the “Three Manly Games”, featuring Bökh (traditional wrestling), horse racing, and archery, along with anklebone shooting. The Naadam Festival is recognised as an important symbol of Mongolian culture, heritage, and national identity, attracting both domestic and international visitors.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) discovered a rare thorium-bearing mineral deposit in Gundlupet taluk, Chamarajanagar district, Karnataka. The deposits occur in monazite, a rare earth mineral that is a major source of thorium and uranium. The identified deposits spread across 700 acres, with 20 acres designated as the core mining area for proposed auction. Thorium is a naturally occurring radioactive metal and is considered a promising alternative nuclear fuel.

The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) dismantled a high-tech Mephedrone (MD) manufacturing laboratory in Pune, Maharashtra, under Operation Vajra. Two key conspirators were arrested from Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh) and Jodhpur (Rajasthan) under the NDPS Act, 1985. The operation followed an earlier seizure of 8.17 kg Mephedrone in Mandsaur and 43.82 kg Mephedrone with precursor chemicals from an illegal laboratory at Mhow. CBN, under the Ministry of Finance and headquartered in Gwalior, regulates opium cultivation and combats narcotics trafficking.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) launched Gramodyam, a rural entrepreneurship development programme, on its 45th Foundation Day. The programme is implemented in collaboration with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). Gramodyam aims to identify, train, mentor, and support aspiring rural entrepreneurs by providing industry-relevant skills, entrepreneurship training, credit facilitation, market linkages, and mentoring. It seeks to promote sustainable rural enterprises, employment generation, and inclusive economic growth.

The Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform, launched by the Ministry of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), are promoting the formalisation of MSMEs and strengthening India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Udyam Registration provides a free, paperless, self-declaration-based online registration for MSMEs, while the Udyam Assist Platform helps informal micro enterprises gain formal recognition. These initiatives promote inclusive growth by supporting women, SC/ST entrepreneurs, rural enterprises, artisans, start-ups, and youth entrepreneurs. As July 2026, more than 8.9 crore enterprises have been registered through the two platforms, generating employment for more than 38 crore people.
