MoRTH’s Signage Guidelines

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has taken a significant step towards improving road safety by unveiling a comprehensive set of guidelines for signages on national highways and expressways. Led by Minister Nitin Gadkari, these new guidelines aim to enhance visibility and provide intuitive guidance to drivers, ultimately reducing accidents and improving traffic flow.

Improving Road Safety and Visibility

The primary purpose of the new guidelines for signages is to improve road safety and visibility for drivers. By adopting large lettering, symbols, and short legends, these signages will provide essential information to drivers more effectively. With better visibility, drivers can react promptly to road conditions, reducing the likelihood of accidents and ensuring smoother traffic flow.

Evaluation Process for Effective Implementation

Setting up these comprehensive guidelines involved a meticulous evaluation process. MoRTH conducted assessments in line with Indian Road Congress (IRC) codes & guidelines, as well as international practices. This thorough evaluation ensures that the signages adhere to the best global standards, promoting safety and coherence in road communication.

Catering to Diverse Road Users

Recognizing the diversity of road users, especially those with limited literacy, the new signages will include pictorial depictions alongside text. This approach aims to cater to a wider set of road users, ensuring better comprehension of traffic rules and regulations. By adopting a more inclusive approach, the guidelines strive to promote safer roads for everyone.

Multilingual Signages for Better Communication

India’s linguistic diversity presents a unique challenge in road communication. MoRTH proposes multilingual road signages, incorporating both English and regional languages. This innovative approach ensures better communication with road users from various linguistic backgrounds, enhancing their understanding of the signages’ messages.

Implementation Across Major Highways

The impact of these guidelines will be widespread, as the new signages are set to be implemented across all upcoming highways, expressways, and greenfield corridors. This extensive coverage aims to create uniformity and consistency in signages, streamlining road communication for drivers across the country.

Prioritizing High Traffic Volumes

To tackle road safety challenges in areas with high traffic volumes, MoRTH will prioritize the implementation of the new guidelines on highways witnessing more than 20,000 passenger cars on the road. This strategic approach aims to address congestion issues and promote better road discipline in areas that experience heavy traffic flow.
