Lingampalli Himaja’s RUDHRA Reaches James Dyson Award Global Top 20
As of 17 October 2026, 20-year-old Indian engineering student Lingampalli Himaja has reached the global top 20 of the James Dyson Award 2026 with RUDHRA, a voice-enabled Braille printer. Himaja studies at Shri Vishnu Engineering College for Women in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh.
RUDHRA and Its Development
RUDHRA is designed to let visually impaired users create Braille documents through speech rather than conventional Braille typing. Himaja developed the idea after a visually impaired student asked, “Why should I type when I can speak?” during her visit to a school for visually impaired students. The device uses Alexa to convert spoken words into text. A Raspberry Pi processes the text and converts it into reverse Braille patterns, which are embossed onto paper. The system combines speech input, computer processing and mechanical embossing to produce a physical document.
James Dyson Award 2026
The James Dyson Award is an international design and engineering competition run by the James Dyson Foundation. On 16 September 2026, Himaja won the India national stage of the 2026 award and received a cash prize of ₹6 lakh. British inventor and industrialist Sir James Dyson will review the global top 20 entries, including RUDHRA. The global winners are scheduled to be announced on 4 November 2026. Each winning invention is set to receive £30,000 to support further development and commercialisation.
Braille and Assistive Technology
Braille is a tactile writing system used by people who are blind or have low vision. A standard six-dot Braille cell arranges raised dots in two columns of three; different dot combinations represent letters, numbers and symbols. Embossing creates raised dots on paper that can be read by touch. Voice-enabled assistive technologies convert spoken commands or words into digital instructions. In RUDHRA, speech recognition and a Raspberry Pi-based process connect spoken language with Braille embossing.
Important Facts for Exams
- Louis Braille developed the Braille system in the nineteenth century.
- A standard six-dot Braille cell has two columns and three rows.
- Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer platform.
- Alexa is a voice assistant developed by Amazon.
The James Dyson Award 2026 global winners are scheduled to be announced on 4 November 2026. RUDHRA is among the 20 global finalists and uses a Raspberry Pi to process text for Braille embossing.
