HAL Airport Operationalises Satellite-Guided Helicopter Approach

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport in Bengaluru, Karnataka, became the first airport in India to operationalise the Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) satellite-guided helicopter approach procedure on 7 August 2026. The precision navigation system was designed and developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and was validated through flight trials by HAL test pilots before approval by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Required Navigation Performance and Category H

Required Navigation Performance is a performance-based navigation system that uses satellite guidance and onboard avionics to maintain a specified flight path. Category H, or CAT H, is the helicopter-specific classification used for approach and landing procedures at heliports and airports handling rotary-wing aircraft.

Operational Features of the Procedure

The RNP CAT H procedure allows helicopters to follow optimised flight paths with greater positional accuracy than conventional visual approaches. The system is designed for use in adverse weather conditions and in areas with urban obstacles, terrain constraints, and dense air traffic.

The new procedure reduces helicopter landing approach time from about 12 minutes to approximately four minutes. It also supports the nearly 50 helicopter movements recorded daily at Bengaluru airport.

Helicopter Operations and Aviation Safety

Helicopter approach procedures are used for air ambulances, disaster response, corporate travel, and defence missions. Satellite-based approach systems are part of modern civil aviation navigation and are used to improve route predictability and airspace management.
