India Ranks Second in APAC Data Centre Capacity

India ranked second in the Asia Pacific region in operational data centre capacity as of 27 May 2026, with 1.6 GW of live capacity. India also placed among the top three global markets by development pipeline, with 3.1 GW of capacity under construction and planned.

Data centre capacity is measured in gigawatts, and 1 GW equals 1,000 megawatts. India’s operational capacity of 1.6 GW places it behind the largest APAC market and ahead of several other regional markets. Mumbai is a major Indian data centre hub and is projected to cross 1 GW of operational capacity by the end of 2026.

Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR, and Pune are secondary data centre markets in India. Hyderabad ranked as the top secondary market in APAC and ninth globally as of 27 May 2026. These markets attract investment because of connectivity, enterprise demand, and proximity to large user bases.

Policy and Infrastructure Context

The Draft National Data Centre Policy 2025 proposes tax exemptions of up to 20 years and GST input tax credits on capital expenditure. India had over 10.5 GW of capacity in the land acquisition stage as of 27 May 2026. India ranked fourth globally in electricity production growth between 2022 and 2025, and transmission losses stood at 14.2%.
