Ladakh Begins Premium Apricot Exports to UAE

Ladakh is scheduled to send its first fresh apricot export consignment to the United Arab Emirates on 14 July 2026. The shipment is part of a 1,000 metric tonne apricot export initiative linked to a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ladakh administration and Lulu Retail.

Apricot Production and Export Context

Apricot cultivation is an important horticultural activity in Ladakh, where cold desert conditions support fruit varieties adapted to high-altitude climates. The export plan covers the GI-tagged Raktsey Karpo apricot and the local Halman variety, both of which are associated with the region’s fruit economy.

Institutional Framework

The export arrangement involves the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority and the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India. Lulu Retail is responsible for procurement, processing, packaging, and marketing in overseas markets, while the Ladakh administration is coordinating the supply chain.

Logistics and Procurement

A dedicated cargo aircraft is scheduled to depart from Delhi for the UAE on 14 July 2026 with the inaugural consignment. Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra reviewed procurement, grading, sorting, packaging, transportation, and export arrangements on 10 July 2026.
