Karnataka Launches AI-Powered Digital Crop Survey

Karnataka launched the Composite Digital Crop Survey (CDCS) on 6 August 2026 as a state-level initiative for crop data collection and agricultural mapping. The project uses Artificial Intelligence, Synthetic Aperture Radar, high-resolution satellite imagery, drone surveys, Geographic Information System data, and machine learning for plot-level assessment.

The CDCS is a pilot project that will begin in five selected hoblis across Karnataka. A hobli is an administrative sub-district unit used in the revenue system of Karnataka. The pilot covers all geographical divisions of the state and builds on the existing Digital Crop Survey framework.

Digital Crop Survey in Karnataka

Karnataka’s Digital Crop Survey has collected plot-level data through a GIS-based mobile application since 2018. The system is linked to land and crop records used by the Revenue and Agriculture departments. The new CDCS expands this framework with remote sensing and AI-based tools.

Departments and Institutional Partners

The initiative involves the Revenue, Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, Fisheries, and IT-BT departments of Karnataka. A stakeholder workshop for the project was held at the CAAS Officers’ Research and Training Centre in Bengaluru on 6 August 2026. The Agriculture Department is also developing a separate AI-powered advisory platform for more than one crore registered farmers.
