International Fellowships for Indian Students

International fellowships and scholarships help Indian students, researchers and professionals access funded study opportunities abroad. Most of these awards cover tuition, living costs, travel and health insurance, while also encouraging academic merit, leadership and cross-cultural exchange.

• Coverage: Tuition fees, monthly living allowance, return airfare, arrival allowances and UK visa application fees.
• Eligibility focus: Minimum of two years of work experience (2,800 hours) and an obligation to return to India for at least two years after study.
• Commonwealth Scholarships (United Kingdom): Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for citizens of Commonwealth nations, including India. In India, it is coordinated through the Ministry of Education.
• Coverage: Approved tuition and examination fees, monthly living stipend, return flights and warm clothing allowance.
• Study areas: Master’s and PhD programmes across engineering, science, agriculture and social sciences.
• DAAD Scholarships (Germany): Administered by the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). Major programmes include the Helmut-Schmidt-Programme and Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS).
• Coverage: Monthly living stipend, travel grants, health insurance and study allowances.
• Key point: Most German public universities charge zero tuition fees; the grant mainly supports living and research expenses.
• Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme (France): Launched by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and administered by Campus France for master’s and PhD levels.
• Fields: Engineering, economics, management and law.
• Coverage: Monthly allowance, international airfare, health insurance and cultural activity allowance. It does not directly cover university tuition fees, though public universities waive state enrollment fees for recipients.
• MEXT Scholarships (Japan): Funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan.
• Coverage: University entrance examination fees, tuition fees, monthly stipend and round-trip airfare.
• Levels covered: Undergraduate, master’s, PhD and specialised training programmes.
• Australia Awards Scholarships (Australia): Administered by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for long-term postgraduate study.

Institutional and Trust-Based Fellowships

• Rhodes Scholarship (University of Oxford): Established in 1902 by the will of Cecil John Rhodes and managed by the Rhodes Trust.
• Selection and coverage: Five scholarships are awarded annually to Indian applicants for postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. It fully covers Oxford University and college fees, annual living stipend, return airfare, and the UK visa and Immigration Health Surcharge.
