India Wins Maiden Overall Title at Commonwealth Fencing Championships

India won its maiden overall title at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria, after finishing with 35 medals across the Under-23 and Senior divisions. The final tally included 13 gold, 8 silver, and 14 bronze medals, and India won the Wilkinson Sword Trophy for the best overall performance.

The Commonwealth Fencing Championships is a fencing competition for athletes from Commonwealth nations. The 2026 edition was held in Lagos, Nigeria, over four days from August 9 to August 12, 2026. The championship includes individual and team events in the three Olympic fencing weapons: foil, épée, and sabre. These events are conducted separately for men and women in senior and age-group categories.

India’s Medal Tally in Lagos

India began the competition with 17 medals in the Under-23 individual events on August 9, 2026. The Under-23 gold medallists were Nikhil Wagh, Joys Ashita, Prachi Lohan, and Jeferlin. On August 10, 2026, Taniksha Khatri won gold in the Senior Women’s Épée individual event. She defeated Khushi Dabhade 15–7 in an all-Indian final, and became the first Indian fencer to win this senior individual title at the championship. On August 11, 2026, India added five senior individual medals, including three gold medals. The senior individual gold medallists were Kanaglakshmi in Women’s Foil, Rajendran Shanthimol Sherjin in Men’s Épée, and Karan Singh in Men’s Sabre.

Team Events and Wilkinson Sword Trophy

India won gold in five of the six Senior Team events on August 12, 2026. The gold medals came in Men’s Sabre, Women’s Sabre, Men’s Épée, Women’s Épée, and Women’s Foil, while Men’s Foil brought a silver medal. The team performance earned India the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. The Commonwealth Fencing Federation has awarded this trophy since 1982 to the nation with the best overall performance at the championships.
