Government sells 4,000 tonnes of onion buffer stock

The Government of India sold about 4,000 tonnes of buffer onions across 17 cities during the first ten days of its subsidised retail intervention in 2026. The central buffer stock for the year 2026 stands at 1.21 lakh tonnes, and the onions are being sold at Rs 35 per kg in selected price-sensitive markets.

Buffer stock is a reserve quantity of a commodity kept by the government to manage supply disruptions and price volatility. In India, onion buffer operations are used to moderate retail prices during periods of seasonal shortage, crop damage, or market stress.

Agencies and Distribution Network

The National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India handle the distribution of buffer onions. These agencies move the stock to retail points in different cities and coordinate sales through cooperative and public distribution channels.

Transport and Market Coverage

A dedicated railway service named Kanda Express has been used to transport bulk onion consignments to Delhi and Chennai, with another shipment planned for Guwahati. The intervention covers 17 cities and targets markets where onion prices remain sensitive to supply changes.
